Really Good, Super Dope Award Show Performances, Part I

Earlier, I made a post about why award show performances aren’t as good as they used to be. Well, I’m going to take that a step further and list a few of the award show performances I’ve seen in recent years that have made me think “Now that is a good performance!”

Lady Gaga opening the 2009 VMAs

Before she was trying too hard with the blasphemous religious imagery, Lady Gaga was still a relatively normal pop star with the usual extravagant performances.

The best part: Can you really forget the manic piano playing at 3:20 that led to her horrifically dropping the mic and the (fake) blood on her eye at 4:07? Neither can I.

Britney Spears at the 2001 VMAs

No one can discuss iconic award show performances without mentioning Britney. That said, one of my favorites from her comes from either 2000 or 2001. I asked my sister (and resident Britney stan) Kiersten to choose and she went with the 2001 “Slave 4 U” performance.

The best part: Um, when she brings out that snake at 2:30, of course.

Beyoncé at the 2011 VMAs

How else would we have known about Blue Ivy? Besides that, Beyoncé sounded phenomenal here and you could see she was really feeling what she was singing. That doesn’t come through often in her performances, although she’s always a great entertainer.

The best part: Naturally, when she tosses the mic down and unbuttons her jacket at 4:30. Plus Jay and Kanye’s reactions are  pretty amusing:

I realize these are all from the VMAs, but that’s pretty much what the show is known for. More diverse picks are in part two.
