Comebacks and Breakdowns: 2010 BET Awards

It was the night of the comeback at the 2010 BET Awards, with KanYe West opening the show on top a psedo-volcano with his new single “Power”. The egotistical rapper made his first award show performance since the Taylor debacle at the 2009 VMAs. The old school also made a return. El DeBarge performed his hit Rhythm f the Night and debuted his new single, “Problems.”

Prince was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award. Patti Labelle performed “Purple Rain” for the music icon, while a pregnant (and barefoot) Alicia Keys surprised Prince when she climbed on top a piano while singing his hit, “Adore” .

But the biggest comeback (and moment) of the night was a Michael Jackson tribute by Chris Brown. The performance began with the troubled singer behind a curtain, and he soon went from “The Way You Make Me Feel” to “Remember the Time”. After a slick LED breakdown into “Smooth Criminal”, the gifted singer and dancer did as much justice as possible to the Kind of Pop, replicating his iconic 1983 MOTOWN 25th moonwalk. Brown then broke down as he performed the first few lines of “Man In the Mirror”. Perhaps it was the heaviness of performing a tribute to his hero, his tarnished career or both that drove him to tears. A surprised crowd helped him finished the song.

  1. I've loved, loveed, loved Alicia Keys since we were trotting back in elementary school. lol. I beleive that this year she has definitely proven what she can STILL do and I think that she deserved every award she won.As for Chris Brown (sexy sexy), I thought that was a very touchy moment, despite all the chatter about it being "staged', i truly think that it was sincere. You could tell that he was breaking down, not because of the tribute, but because of being gone so long and having to struggle to get his fans back. IMHO: I think that Chris Brown deserves every bit of support that people showed Rihanna. Point, Blank, Period (.) lol-Ke.Solo.

  2. @Ke.Solo LOVED the "Period (.)" I'm still not sure how I feel about Chris. I firmly believe just about everyone (you know, not terrorists or what-have-you) deserves a second chance though.

  3. I loved Prince's reaction to Alicia Key's popping up oin the piano! And lol @ the guy behind him :O lol! Of course the big thing was Chris Brown & if his tears were authentic. I'm not gonna act like I wasn't skeptical at first but the lyrics probably struck a chord with him
